The Living Stories Behind 5 Bob Marley Albums

The Living Stories Behind 5 Bob Marley Albums

Bob Marley accomplished a great deal in 36 years. He released a string of successful albums and lived to enjoy a small portion of his eventual fame. But he never forgot his roots, and he was outspoken about his political and religious beliefs until the day he died. His work lived on, of course, in its influences on music and culture. With this in mind, let’s look at five of our favorite Bob Marley and the Wailers albums, the stories behind them, and how they still affect us today.

Strange Facts Behind 8 Grateful Dead Albums

Strange Facts Behind 8 Grateful Dead Albums

The Grateful Dead were a strange sort of band. They found great success as eclectic musicians who weren’t exactly radio-friendly: they moved from country to jazz to reggae to psychedelic space rock, all with a heavy dose of improvisation. And, of course, there were copious amounts of instrumental jamming. (You thought we were going to say drugs, didn’t you?) The Dead worked with major record labels but preferred to handle everything themselves, foreshadowing elements of punk and other do-it-yourself movements. Similarly, they weren’t afraid of marketing or merchandising, but they ran it all, just as they retained their album publishing rights and held their physical recording masters. Whereas these factors may have doomed other bands to obscurity, they literally earned the Grateful Dead a following. And we mean “following” literally: their legion of fans known as “Deadheads” were rabidly loyal, often travelling alongside the band for months or even years. In that spirit, join us on a strange trip through the facts and stories behind 8 Grateful Dead...

Superman in Love

Superman in Love

It’s TMZ day at the blog, where we talk all about the super-salacious details on Superman. Like, did you know that Superman’s greatest superpower is his capacity to love? Alright, that’s not really true and we’re not turning into a gossip blog. What is true, however, is that stories about Superman’s relationships have always figured prominently in the comics. Even after 77 years, we still care to read about the emotional bonds of one of Earth’s most powerful superheroes. Unlike some other characters, it seems like writers always give Superman a romantic partner or love interest, whether we’re talking about Lois Lane or Lana Lang or Wonder Woman. And yes, there have been some…let’s say, stranger partners. So without further super-ado, let’s look at Superman in love.

To put things in perspective, this was more than 20% of the British public! People couldn’t get enough and were buying Dalek-related media and products left and right. “What Dalek media? What Dalek merchandise?” you may ask. Let’s explore the wild and wacky world of...

Final Fantasy: Behind the Bestiary [Infographic]

Final Fantasy: Behind the Bestiary

Final Fantasy is a wildly successful series of games and other media developed by Square Enix. The franchise began as a role-playing video game for the Famicom—later released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in the U.S.—drawing from Asian, European, and Middle-Eastern fantasy along with time travel and futuristic elements. Successive games have pushed the boundaries of futurism and also dabbled in steampunk and the post-apocalypse. Square Enix has taken a similar approach with their media: in addition to the dozens of video games, they have developed films and television series, manga and novels, and soundtracks.

Even through ever-changing genres and media forms, Final Fantasy is perhaps most well-known for its recurring cast of monsters that serve to hinder and test the heroes. Enjoy this "museum tour" through six of those monsters, their etymology and backgrounds, and a glimpse at how their appearances have evolved...

Doctor Who? A Guide to the Doctors

Doctor Who? A guide to The Doctors

Who is The Doctor? That is a fantastic question and one with many answers. In short, The Doctor is a Time Lord, a human-like alien from the planet Gallifrey, who helps both individuals and civilizations in need. He travels through space-time in his TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space) and wields a Sonic Screwdriver, an extraordinary multitool, rather than a weapon. Time Lords are also capable of regenerating upon death, though the regenerated Time Lord is rarely the same: just as everyone has their own personality and tastes, so does each incarnation of a Time Lord. This is a brief guide to the twelve Doctors from the long-running British TV series Doctor Who (plus some asides), their idiosyncrasies, and how their personalities and clothing choices often harmonize with each other.
