Our favorite characters of The Hunger Games are coming to life this week on the big screen, but do they hold up to Suzanne Collins textual vision? Let's take a look at some of our most loved characters.
Katniss Everdeen, the Mockingjay herself, is being portrayed by Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence. Known for her blonde hair in Winter's Bone, not the straight brown locks described in the books, skepticism at the beginning was to be expected, but it seems that Lawrence is turning into the girl on fire. Appearing on the cover of Entertainment Weekly in May 2011, a brunette Lawrence is shown swathed in combat gear with her Mockingjay pin in plain view. And judging by the trailer, Lawrence doesn't disappoint in action either.
Gale, Katniss’s hunting partner and “is-he-or-isn’t-he” love interest, will be played by Liam Hemsworth, who fits almost perfectly into District 12. Described by Collins as having “straight black hair, olive skin, and gray eyes,” Hemsworth fits into the mining, outdoorsy lifestyle of his district and successfully matches the appearance of his character. Hemsworth has been in only one other major film, The Last Song with girlfriend Miley Cyrus, so all eyes will be on him to see if he can perform in a more dramatic role.
Peeta Mellark, bread boy and District 12 tribute, takes The Capitol by storm when he confesses his love for Katniss. The film version of the blonde-haired bread boy, played by Josh Hutcherson, was initially a departure from Collin’s description of lovable Peeta Mellark. Hutcherson’s darker hair and small stature were a far cry from the text, but as proven by his own spread in Entertainment Weekly, he seems to be fitting well in to the games and will hopefully do the character justice.
Fashion designer and emotional support system for Katniss, Cinna’s role was highly debated amongst fans before Lenny Kravitz was cast. Logan Lerman, Cillian Murphy, and even Jude Law were rumored to play our simple, yet fashionable, clothing designer. In the end, though, former rocker Kravitz was given the role, and judging from the trailer, he has slipped into the role of Cinna perfectly. With his work in Precious, we definitely know we can trust Kravitz to give a great performance.
Woody Harrelson has been cast as the drunken former tribute-turned-coach to Katniss and Peeta. Haymitch Abernathy, as described by author Collins, is a rough and tumble former tribute with an ability to out drink any contenders, who occasionally doles out brief spurts of wisdom. Harrelson’s not quite drunk enough demeanor has been a bit of a letdown in the trailer, though, as well as his blonde hair parted down the middle. However, we can only wait and see if Harrelson can perform up to our expectations of lovable, but damaged, Haymitch.
Whether or not we agree with all the casting decisions, the film is bound to be a winner, or at least a fan-favorite. How could you not love one of your most loved books on the big screen? Now we just have to occupy our time until we can run to the theatre and watch this fantastical novel become reality. So, until then: “may the odds be ever in your favor!”
