Believe it or not, the King of Rock 'n Roll actually failed music in high school! Elvis Presley never had any formal musical training, couldn't read music. Largely self-taught, he learned by ear and by rote. By his premature death in 1977 at age 42, he'd become one of only two artists inducted into three different music Halls of Fame. (The other was his friend Johnny Cash, a label-mate at Sun Records.)
As a white man singing "black" music, Elvis defied stereotypes. He scandalized many with the pelvic thrusts he performed while singing. One Catholic bishop denounced him to the FBI as a "threat to national security" because of the ardent reaction he inspired in his teenage female fans. When he appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, the camera operators were instructed to film him only from the waist up. Sullivan deemed Elvis's dance moves to be too suggestive for a family audience. (Miley Cyrus's twerking was more than half a century in the future. Her father hadn't even been born yet!)
