How to Throw An NFL Draft Party

Sure, the NFL draft doesn’t quite draw the viewership that the Super Bowl does, but it is a great time for a party just the same. While a three day extravaganza may be out of the question, you can still have your own NFL draft party to watch the first round picks with some of your football fanatic friends. Here’s are some tips on how to throw a party for the 2015 NFL draft.

April 30th marks the beginning of this year’s three-day NFL draft, where fresh faces in football are called up from college teams to join one of the NFL’s 32 franchises. The top pick generally goes to the team with the worst record the prior year, unless draft picks were involved in part of a trade for other players. There are also 32 compensatory picks given out to teams who lost several players to free agency.

  • Each team receives ten minutes to select their draft pick for the first round. They receive seven minutes for their second round pick, and five minutes for all subsequent round selections.
  • There are seven total rounds, but the first and second are the most talked about as the players drafted during those rounds generally have the most promising NFL careers ahead of them.

First things first: you must dress your best. By best, we mean football shirts are a must, obviously. Wear a shirt from your favorite team, or go with a cute and soft NFL shirt for the event.

An NFL draft party is more about the excitement of the picks and less about the food, but that doesn’t mean you can just forget the menu! Since a Thursday night party doesn’t bode well for extensive food preparation, an easier route may be necessary. What is easier (or more delicious) than pizza and beer? YUM!

Pizza and Beer

Many football connoisseurs have their own theories as to how the drafts will play out according to each team’s needs, so it often becomes a debate over which player will be taken by certain teams. For some, this process is just as important as accurately predicting March Madness brackets. Have each of your guests create their own mock-up of how the draft will go prior to the party. You and your friends can eat, drink, and socialize while you watch the selection play out on live television. The person who gets the most draft picks correct could win a prize. (Or the loser pays for pizza and beer!)
